Position SummarySWACO is seeking a dedicated and dependable Landfill Maintenance Specialist to support the safe and efficient operation of landfill facilities. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining grounds, operating equipment, assisting with facility upkeep, directing traffic, and supporting maintenance activities across landfill operations. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in maintaining safe and clean facilities, and is committed to providing excellent service to both internal and external customers.Essential ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include, but are not limited to: Maintain landfill grounds through mowing, trimming, litter collection, and general cleanup activities.Build, repair, and maintain fencing.Operate SWACO vehicles and equipment, including backhoes, street sweepers, fuel trucks, roll-off trucks, water trucks, and other support equipment.Interact professionally with customers, vendors, visitors, and coworkers.Fuel vehicles and equipment as needed.Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete required Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) documentation.Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.Collect litter and debris from SWACO facilities, roadways, and assigned highway areas.Sweep sidewalks and common areas; remove snow and apply salt to walkways during winter conditions.Direct customers and traffic to designated dumping locations and ensure proper vehicle positioning.Assist with operation and maintenance of odor control systems.Open and secure facility gates at the beginning and end of business operations.Support facility beautification projects, including painting, cleaning, and minor repairs.Clean and maintain restroom facilities and replenish supplies.Assist maintenance personnel with various projects and tasks.Support yard box operations and wheel wash activities as needed.Clean equipment tracks and wheels.Assist with the application of Alternate Daily Cover (ADC) when necessary.Assist mechanics with basic equipment and vehicle maintenance, including tire changes and parts retrieval.Install, repair, and maintain erosion control measures such as silt fences and straw bales.Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsRequired High School Diploma or GED.Valid Ohio Driver's License.Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.Strong work ethic, reliability, and consistent attendance. Preferred Experience performing maintenance, groundskeeping, or facility upkeep activities.Experience operating light and medium-duty equipment. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesSuccessful candidates will demonstrate the ability to: Safely operate light, medium, and heavy equipment.Read and understand safety procedures, operating manuals, and work instructions.Follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.Perform basic mathematical calculations.Maintain a positive and professional attitude.Build effective working relationships with coworkers, customers, and stakeholders.Work respectfully and collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Physical RequirementsThis position requires frequent physical activity, including: Walking, climbing, balancing, lifting, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and working with hand tools.Regular lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds.Occasional lifting and moving of 100 pounds or more.Climbing ladders and working in areas with limited access.Operating power tools and equipment in high-traffic environments.Meeting vision requirements for near vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
